LATE SUMMER TONIFY

To tonify means to strengthen. Tonification Qigong flows nourish the organs, promote a smooth flow of Qi through the meridians and fortify the Qi in the energetic reservoirs.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dominant organs of late summer are the spleen and stomach. Tonifying the spleen and stomach (also called fortifying the spleen) can increase immunity, improve digestion, blood flow and stamina, as well as promote mental clarity and focus.

The energetic phase of this season is the Earth Phase. Earth holds the center of balance in the rhythm of yin and yang. Therefore, tonficiation for this period also focuses on balancing yin and yang within and connecting to the forces of Heaven (yang), Earth (yin) and Human (Qi).

This routine is a powerful alchemy of practices that are designed to tonify the spleen, the stomach and the Four Golden Wheels (the Lower Dantian, Middle Dantian, Upper Dantian and central meridian). The routine begins by building Qi in the Lower Dantian, then progresses through meridian tracing and earth flows, finishing with the Three Forces Standing meditation.

The Three Forces is an essential practice that empowers your dantian energy centers by connecting to the Three Forces of nature (Heaven, Earth and Human). The postures build a strong foundation for your energy body and transform worry into the virtues of trust and confidence. Over time this practice will train you to develop concentration and confidence, ultimately plugging you in to your highest potential.

Most everyone can benefit from tonification Qigong. Those who should be careful with tonification are those who are in an acute stage of a flu, virus or disease. There are specific tonification exercises for diseases such as cancer that focus in on specific organs and these should be prescribed through personal consultation with a medical Qigong doctor.
