Opening the Kua and Zhan Zhuang

Perfect if you’re new to Qigong or want to build a strong foundation, this session introduces the kua—the hip joints, known in Chinese as the Leg Gates—which connect the lower body to the torso. The kua are the key to moving from Qi rather than from force. When open, they allow energy from the Earth to rise through the legs and gather in the Dantian, giving your movements strength, stability, and flow.

This video is especially powerful to practice in Late Summer, when Earth energy is at its peak. By opening the kua, you harness the nourishing power of the season to ground your body, center your mind, and cultivate vitality.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to sense and release the kua through simple exercises designed to improve mobility, ease tension, and awaken awareness of this vital area. Understanding and opening the kua is essential for all Qigong—whether flowing sequences or standing meditation—because it connects you to your source of power in your center.

We’ll end with a powerful Zhan Zhuang (standing meditation) so you can immediately feel the difference in your stance and experience how an open kua deepens your connection to Qi.

This video is part of our upcoming Standing Meditation Series which will be offered as part of the YOQI Path of Practice membership.
