White Crane Frolics

The traditional Qigong animal frolics are classic Qigong Flow routines designed for everyone to support health and Qi flow. There are many different variations of Crane Frolic forms in Qigong. There are even whole schools dedicated to Crane style martial arts. The characteristic of crane forms is expanding the wings and leg balance movements. Expanding the wings with outstretched arms opens the heart and lungs and circulates the fire and metal element. Crane movements also involve a lot of weight shifting, which promotes balance and rooting that supports the earth element. Therefore, Crane routines are wonderful to do in Summer, Late Summer and Autumn period.

This White Crane Frolics Form focuses on expanding the wings and opening the chest, so it is very helpful for clearing emotions like sadness, depression or grief. On a practical note, it is a wonderful routine to do at work on break because it stretches the neck and shoulders, where tension builds up from using computers. The cranes beak hand mudra stretches the tendons in the wrists to prevent carpel tunnel and arthritis from overuse of keyboards.

Finally on spiritual level, the crane is a symbol of observation and awareness. The crane can stand very still yet swoop down and catch a fish at moment. Therefore, in this video I have included longer pauses between each movement so that you can feel the qi and calm your mind. Take your time to practice the video a few times until you feel comfortable with the physical movements. Once you learn the physical aspect of the movement, change your focus to the breath and action of Qi.
